LCD vs VFD vs OLED Displays

Post by Henry »

Let’s explore three different character display technologies. I recently came upon one of our very long-term customers who has used all three displays in the same product. All three displays are still produced and available. I want to give credit to Dynocom Industries (https://www.dynocom.net) for the pictures/videos that I borrowed. Dynocom Industries offers the most diverse dynamometer product line in the industry.

First part, definitions:

LCD: Liquid Crystal Display
VFD: Vacuum Florescent Display
OLED: Organic Light Emitting Diode

Here is a quick little chart to show the different display technologies and performance. Selecting the appropriate display technology is very important for any project. Please contact us and use our 20+ years of experience to help you select the perfect display for your application.

(1) This is partially dependent on the LCD type, a Yellow/Green transflective will have a higher viewing angle than a negative transmissive LCD
(2) This is dependent on the colour of the display, a positive FSTN white backlight will be better than a STN display.
(3) A VFD in direct sunlight will have a poor contrast ratio, with a grey polarized filter, it will have a much better contract ratio. In shade it has much higher contrast ratio.
(4) With a VFD filter you can modify the colour, but it is limited.
(5) Transflective displays are very high, Transmisive displays are low

We offer many different interface solutions, such as USB, I2C, RS422 or RS232 in all three different display technologies.
