help! installing fans and temp probe on matrix orbital 212

I have the Matrix Orbital 212. It is installed with the internal USB cable. When I connect three 12v fans to the fan headers will I need to apply a high power input? I also need the fans to run all the time. Does that mean I need to remove jumper 2? And is jumper 1 already connected? I also need to know where to plug in the 3 temperature probes that I

Hello...

If you connect 3 12V fans to the fan headers you will need to apply an unmodified power cable to the white connector. On jumpers 1 and 2, is there a resistor across the jump?

You need to remove the resistor to run the fans from 'power on' rather than from thesystem power on, if you have revision 1.4 pcb (look on the back of the mx212) the temp probes connect to the white headers to the top left of the PCB.

Hi,

Thank you for your reply. So you said I need to remove one resistor, but previous message says 2 jumpers.. Which one do I remove, or do I remove them both?

How do you recommend I remove these resistors?

Can't seem to tell what version of the board I have. I just bought it, so it is probably pretty new.

If its new its almost definitely rev 1.4 so it should have fan type headers for attaching devices to the High powered GPO.

You need to remove Jumper 2 to allow power from an unmodified floppy cable.

In this image you can see the HP GPOs as red headers and the revision of the PCB as 1.4. Just below the HP GPOs (red) you can see the floppy cable header as well. The black jumper below the high powered GPOs will allow you to switch the high power GPOs from 12v to 5v if you need to.

You'll need to carefully desolder the bridge and remove the resistor which looks like a small, square cube. If you havent desoldered anything before get some who has to do it! :wink:

Just thought I should jump in here. Don't remove that resistor indicated by Johnny. Just to clarify what those two resistors are for:

1) Allows the unit to be powered from the 5V line from the unmodified floppy connector
2) Allows the unit to be powered by the USB line

Removing #1 will prevent the unit from powering up until the USB is initalized by the OS (1-2min from powerup).

The only thing you want to change is the black 3 pin jumper directly above the white power connector. The jumper should be across the leftmost two pins. That jumper is used to select which voltage will be delivered to the red high power outputs. The left two pins shorted will deliver 12v, the right two, 5v.

And as for where you connect the temperature probes, they hook up to the four white connecctors on the left side of the picture.

Blahhh! So let me get this straight! Even though the manual says so and people here tell me to, I DO NOT desolder the resistors?

I simply move the jumper over? That makes the most sense.

Can I get a third opinion please. :)

Considering I desinged the unit, I think the buck stops here. :D

The manual is being updated. The problem is that we have old (incorrect) and new manuals floating around. We're looking to solve that ASAP and get this all cleared up.

Yes, but what has to be done to allow connected fans to switch on when the power is switched on? rather than the MO unit after the OS boots?

I was lead to believe (by instructon from the manual else i read it wrong) that what i have just described was the way to do this?

:eyebrow: DOH!

ummm... i removed the resistor following instruction from the manual! :-?

So i didn't have to do this after all to run the fans from system power on!?

:(

No worries...This was our fault...some earlier units didn't have a resistor. The manuals are in the process of being updated!! Sorry for any inconvenience. :)

Ok to be sure I got this right...

The goal:
* power the unit from the floppy cable (not the USB power)
* Instant power on to the GPO's
* 12volt GPO's

To accomplish this, I need to remove the resistor on jumper 1 and jumper 2? Also make sure the black jumper is on the leftmost shunts?

NO! definitely do not remove jumper/resistor 1!!!!!

If i read miles correctly you dont have to remove any jumpers/resistors! (?) just make sure the floppy cable is attached and the black jumper is on the correct setting for 12V.

Hi,

Can the floppy cable from the PSU be connected directly to the High Power Input socket?
Do I need the "modified" one Matrix sells with the High Power Output option?
