Is my VFD2041 toast?

hmm..
I was a little anxious to get my new HTPC up and running, and forgot about that special power connector.. I tried all kinds of cables, but nothing worked. (this means floppy connector and some other connector of the same type with purple and black wires..) Now I found the original power cable, but when connected, the PSU won't let the computer boot
It doesn't even reach POST or anything, the power is on for less than a second and then goes off. Does this indicate a short? The PSU has some kind of built-in protection for those things.
I receive response from the VFD through the LCD tester program supplied by MO, but there are no characters showing on the display.
Are there any more tests I can run before giving up? Can I send it in for repair? Am I totally screwed?
I really liked the look and fast response of the display...
