LK162-12 Broken?

I have three LK162-12 modules. Two of them are over 3 months old (but less than 1 year) and one is brand new. It seems that the new one does not work. Sending messages via I2C results in scrambled text that jumps all over the screen. The same code works correctly on the older units. The new unit also does not work correctly with supplied serial port test software. When text is sent via serial it does not appear in the correct place on the display and other funny characters appear randomly too. The new unit looks different to the older ones. It has a black bezel (the old ones were plain metal). The LCD PCB is also different. The label has code 1295-04M09 on it.
Is this module broken or does the software need to be changed to make it work? I cannot find any mention of this on the matrix orbital website.
Thanks,

Try the following instructions under RS-232 communications.
1. Turn off the display
2. Put a jumper on pins 3 and 4 of the keypad connector (R3 and C1)
3. Power up the display. The baud rate is now set to 19,200
4. Remove the jumper and change the RS-232 port settings to the desired baud rate
5. Turn off the display
6. Power up the display
Hope this works for you.

I am using I2C so I don't understand how resetting the baud rate would help - or does it reset other things too?
I tried this anyway and the result is still the same.
Furthermore, it appears that sending control characters results in those characters being displayed on the screen rather than being used for control - is this a clue as to what is wrong? This is why the text appears to be flying all over the place.
I also tried the supplied test program (Matrix Orbital Display Test). When using display text at position, you get two solid block characters before the text and the text is not in the correct position (the cursor just advances each time). A few of the control codes
do work (such as backspace and clear screen) but most result in one or two strange characters on the screen. Please advise if I should return this module for replacement.

What type of controller are you using to establish communication with our display??

You have confirmed that the unit responds part of the time to your commands...this establishes that you are actually communicating with the display, however not everything is corresponding correctly. We wanted to make sure that you can correspond with RS232 first to make sure there isn't something fundamentally wrong with the unit before we waste your time troubleshooting in I2C. If we can establish that your unit is functioning fine in our default protocol, then we can move on from there.

Can you send me an email at
myero@matrixorbital.ca and I have one more thing I would like you to try, but I have to send you a file in order for it to work...!
