MX2 Contrast problems

Hmm, I have just started playing with an MX2 USB lcd and I think I must be doing something wrong.
When I power up the system (or plug in the LCD) I just see a bunch of blocks like the contrast is cranked way up.
I installed the USB drivers and the LCD is on com3.
If I open a serial console and push the keys/buttons I get characters (one for each press) showing up on the serial console.
The display is autodiscovered by LCDC and I can set brightness and toggle the backlight using LCDC.
I can also adjust the brightness with display_tuner.
Changing contrast has no effect in either program. Blocks are still present and do not dim at all.
Is there anything else I can look at?
Thanks.
