Can you short out a row and a column with a piece of wire, so we can determine if the problem is the display or the keypad?

This isn't a trick. This is what happens when you press a key, but we are using a wire to inplace of a key on the keypad. When you press a key, a row and a column is being shorted. If you have the row shorted with the column, and you see a character in the log, the problem will be with your keypad.
What you have in the picture is correct. You are shorting row 1 column 6.
Let me know if you get a character from this.

It looks as though there is something wrong with the keypad. It could possibly be the keypad connector. The unit is fine, since you got the characters showing up on the screen. If you want to get a new keypad, and you want a price inquiry, you can contact sales at
info@matrixorbital.com.
