serial matrix orbital display dusnt work

I bought a serial matrix orbital display 2*20 with a serial connector.I put the cable between my com1 and the display but there is no text on the display,i selected the right display but nothing is happening.The display came inclusive some software and it works with that,but i want smartie to use my lcd,dus anyone know what the problem can be?i run xp pro,THX.Koos.The Hague.
