Hello,

I'm trying to complete a project that will make an LCD display transparent. Currently a GLK24064-25 display is being used to display the information. I know that this LCD can be made into a clear unit, I've done it with smaller watches and things. The only problem is that the way the LCD is connected to the driver board, it almost has to be behind the LCD (which defeats the purpose of a clear LCD).

Does anyone know if I can just carefully solder wire between the driver leads and the LCD? Either that, if anyone knows of a provider or type of LCD that has all the leads on the bottom of the display or if they come off in a ribbon (I think the term for that is TAB) that would help me a lot. I can't seem to find anything bigger than a watch face that is like this though.

Thanks for posting on the forum.

The GLK24064-25 is composed of the LCD and the Matrix Orbital board which are held together via the soldered 2x10 connector on one of the short ends of the board, and on the other short end are 2 connections for backlighting. Also, note that we squirt some glue to get the boards even more physically connected.

When we do R&D troubleshooting that calls for separating the two boards, we end up cutting the connectors using a jigsaw, then carefully desoldering all the pins out of the LCD and cleaning the holes where the connector used to connect. When you get them separated, you can do any connections you want from the LCD to the GLK24064-25 controller board. Take into consideration that the connections should not be too long and that power and ground connections should be thicker (wires). Of course even when you do careful desoldering, separating the two boards voids your warranty.

I believe the LCDs only have holes for connections, if you need to have them off a ribbon cable, then you just solder the ribbon cable on those holes.
