Just a thought: routing the serial connection to the LCD from outside the case is ardly a neat solution. Plenty of motherboards come with internal USB connectors however, and given the possible trend towards "legacy-free" MoBos (viz. Abit MAX range), how about producing a USB LCD? Power connection could be integrated at that (unless it is used to control some big fans of course).

Or can a serial LCD be connected by a serial-to-USB cable?

The USB cable creates a virtual COM Port... allowing you LCD software to work like it's connected to a normal serial LCD...
