After much deliberation and thought, I finally dicided to ask someone more knowledgable about the VFD's available here at MO. I have already decided that I want the VK204-24-USB, or MX5, depending on how things work out.
The computer case I will be working with (eventually!) is the Thermalrock Eclipse. As you can se from some of the photos supplied by Thermalrock, the case is quite unique in that the doors open from the middle. The way I was originally going to do things was the lazy way: slap on an MX5 unit, and away we go. The thing is, I'd have to keep the doors open to see the beautiful VFD, but then that'd ruin the overall look of the case, with the CD holder and all. So I have noew decieded to mount the VFD onto the door, between the CD holder and LED/switch cluster
If you take a look here, third image down, the case is wider than your average midi case, so that shuld give us enough width for the VFD; if I interpreted the manual correctly, the entire VFD should be 9.8mm wide, and it looks like each door on the Eclipse case is about 10 or 11cm.
Now, the only issue is depth: there isn't much of a gap between door and drive. It looks like the VFD unit is a little over 3cm deep, and the case appears to only have about 1.5cm distance between optical drive and case door front surface. Any suggestions? Also, the case door looks like it's quite thick, and I'm afraid of damaging the door.
Finally, I'd like to clarify some of the VFD filter colours. Put simply, the photography in the online store looks shocking. I really can't tell the filter colour clearly just from looking at the photos. Could someone be so kind as to take a snapshot of their VFD with a filter? It can be any size, I'd just like to compare the filters to see which one I'd prefer.
