Two general questions for ESD and keypad

Hi,

the two questions I would like to find answer to are (considering GLK12232-25-SM LCD):

1. Is there any ESD protection on the RS-232 Tx and Rx lines?
2. Can a custom made keypad be connected to the LCD, where the keypad is made of simple push-buttons, where each button shorts a column and a row? Will there be a problem pressing two buttons at the same time?

1. No, but the Rx and Tx do go through a RS232 chip.
